Ever since we first spied and purchased our bull in Tubac, Arizona that was subsequently assigned the critical job of guarding our tequila collection and bars, we have been fans of mfa/eronga. Although the owners are an American couple and the quirky hand-painted, lacquered furniture and accessories are sold in limited upscale furniture stores and galleries in the Southwest USA, they are made by 80 local artisans right here in the small lakeside village of Erongaricuero, 18 kilometers from Patzcuaro.
When we visited the factory in 1999, it disappointingly was closed for the Day of the Dead celebration, but today it was in full operation. During our fascinating personal tour, a completed floppy-eared rabbit, like none we had ever seen, caught our eyes. Although our guide had told us that they do not sell out of the factory, I had to ask in my broken Spanish if we could possibly buy the rabbit. No. We continued through the wood shop. On the way out, we saw the rabbit once again. Will it be shipped to your main gallery in Tucson? Yes. When will you ship it? Four weeks. I said once again how much we loved it. As we were nearing the end of the tour, we passed by the owner, and our guide whispered to her how much we liked the rabbit. Mrs. Rosenthal must have adopted the Mexican way of wanting to make people happy because she turned to us and said that because the color had not come out quite right for the custom order, she would let us buy it.
